This is an interesting novel from the author of A Hologram for the King, another great book.

It starts with Mae Holland being employed by The Circle, a fictitious technology firm in California. It is Google meets Microsoft and Facebook with bits of Apple and Twitter mixed in, and blending open-source idealism with West Coast cool, it’s her dream job. She stays in the beautiful (free) accommodation, goes to lavish parties and sees famous musicians hired by the firm. The progressive Chief Executives bring out new developments weekly, all aimed at improving transparency and information sharing.

Mae becomes more and more drawn into the world of Zings and on-line openness, but gradually loses touch with the real-world, her family and eventually herself as she becomes a zealot for The Circle’s increasing dubious activities.

Blending a personal journey with wider ethical questions related to technology monopolies, this novel is both tense and thought-provoking.

Definitely worth a read.
